A prehistoric, Amerindian site is located within its vicinity and suggests that prehistoric peoples may have used the area for fishing and settlement. Roseau, A Historical Roseau Walking Tour
Roseau, A Historical Roseau Walking Tour
Embark on a captivating journey through the heart of Roseau, guided by a knowledgeable tour guide who will lead you through the rich history and culture of Dominica. Your adventure begins with a visit to the Negre Mawon Emancipation Statue, a striking tribute to the Maroons of Dominica who fought against slavery by seeking refuge in the island's dense forests. This powerful seven-foot monument, created by Dominican artist Franklyn Zamore, honors the brave souls who resisted oppression and gave their lives in the battle for freedom. Unveiled in 2013, the statue stands as a symbol of resilience and freedom. Next, continue to St. Gerard's Hall, the spiritual center for the local Catholic community, where mass is held on Sundays. Here, you'll learn about the Roseau Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven, a beautiful Gothic-Romanesque Revival structure built from 1800 to 1916. The cathedral, originally a humble thatched hut, now towers above the city's rooftops and is currently under renovation. Sunday masses are temporarily celebrated at St. Gerard's Hall while the cathedral undergoes restoration. From there, stroll down Constitution Hill and into the bustling streets of Roseau, particularly King George V Street, where you'll discover the town's Victorian-era architecture. Many of these historic buildings still serve as residences or have been converted into vibrant businesses, offering a glimpse into the island's colonial past. The tour continues with a visit to the Botanic Gardens, established in 1889 during Dominica's colonial period. Originally designed to support crop diversification, the gardens were once among the finest in the West Indies. Though Hurricane David in 1979 caused significant damage, including the fall of a massive African baobab tree, many plants have since been restored, and the gardens remain a serene escape in the heart of Roseau. Before concluding your excursion, enjoy a stop at DORNE at "The Realm", where you'll be treated to a complimentary beverage in an atmosphere that engages all your senses. This unique venue offers a blend of tasteful lighting, cultural music, and beautiful decor, creating an immersive experience that celebrates both local and international cultural influences. Your journey wraps up with a stroll along Great George Street, where you'll take in the historic charm of "Old Roseau," capturing the essence of the city's architectural heritage. Please note: We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sunscreen.
